Sigma Sigma Rho volunteers in many different ways to give back to the community.
Our national Philanthropy has been aimed

Sigma for Society

 

"Sigma for Society" is Sigma Sigma Rho's National Philanthropy effort during Women's History Month. All of our establishments across the nation will participate in a week of community service and philanthropic events for awareness and prevention of domestic violence.

Gamma Chapter - Rutgers University

 

 

SAGA Service Event
Sunday, March 27th - 10:00 a.m - 2:00 p.m

At the beginning of our South Asian Greek Alliance week we had a bamboo cutting and cleaning up of the bamboo forests of Rutgers gardens. The SAGA Service event was a four hour event that took place with all the other eight south asian organizations on campus including Delta Kappa Delta, Delta Phi Omega, Sigma Beta Rho, Delta Epsilon Psi, Iota Nu Delta, Beta Chi Theta, Kappa Phi Gamma, Delta Sigma Iota. The organization SAGA week was associated with during the event was SAYA (South Asian Youth Action).

 

  

NJ PIRG Hunger Cleanup
Saturday, April 9th - 10:00 am - 2:00 p.m

The hunger cleanup was a four hour event where sisters cleaned up Highland Park. Work involved pulling weeds and maintaining the landscape. All sisters were required to donate $10 each and sisters who did not attend were fined $20. The money that was raised went to fighting homelessness and hunger under the NJ PIRG organization.

 

Sigma Week Cleanup
Sunday, April 17th - 10:30 am - 1:30 pm

This is a cleanup hosted by the Sigma Sigma Rho Gamma Chapter as a start of our Sigma Week. The entire Sigma Week is for the Domestic Violence Prevention group at Rutgers and our national Philanthropy- Sakhi. All sisters must attend this three hour service event as we help and contribute by cleaning up our local Rutgers community.

Delta Chapter - Baruch College

 

Relay for Life

Delta Chapter participated in Relay for Life on our campus and raised over $100 by selling henna tattoos. The money we have raised along with the contributions of many other participating organizations all added up to a generous amount. We have successfully donated it to this great cause to help find a cure for cancer.

Keen Center Service Event
March 19, 2011 

On March 19, 2011 many of the Delta Sisters attended a philanthropy event at the Keen Center. Each volunteer was paired with a disabled child for the day, and the sisters were able to provide guidance and entertainment during this hands-on event.

 


Origami Workshop Service Event
April 12, 2011

On April 12, 2011, Delta Sisters held a Japan Release Fundraiser with an Origami Workshop co-hosted with Phi Beta Sigma. For every origami crane that was made $2 was donated to Japan by a program held by ABC news.

 

GEMS Workshop
April 28th, 2011

On April 28th, 2011 Delta Chapter sisters hosted a Gems Workshop co-hosted with Zeta Phi Beta, Theta Phi Gamma and Sigma Lambda Upsilon. The Workshop was held to promote awareness of women being trafficked in the US and to raise money for GEMS. During the workshop, we sold bracelets made with the logo of GEMS at the price of $2. All of the proceeds went to an organization dedicated to ending sex trafficking.

Epsilon Chapter - University of Georgia

 

 

Donation Drive
February 28th, 2011 - 11 am - 2 pm at Tate Plaza (UGA)

All proceeds and clothing/toiletry items were collected at our student center and were donated to Project Safe (a local domestic violence shelter). The items donated ranged from clothes to cleaning supplies.

 

 

Percentage Night
March 1st, 2011 - 4 pm - 10 pm at Sweet Peppers Deli

This was a percentage night that was hosted by Epsilon Chapter and all the money raised was donated to Project Safe. Ten percent of everyone's purchases at the Deli from 4pm-close was donated to to benefit Project Safe.

Cottage Cleanup
March 2nd, 2011 - 4 pm - 6 pm at The Cottage Sexual Assault Center

Epsilon Chapter cleaned the outdoor area of the Sexual Assault Center by repainting the entrance and deck area, removing weeds on the playground, cleaning up the deck, and rearranging landscape.

 


Cooking Dinner for the Homeless Shelter
March 3rd, 2011 - 5:30 pm - 7 pm at local Georgia Homeless Shelter

Sisters pitched in their own money to buy a taco dinner to cook for the local homeless shelter in Athens. Sisters made tacos, burritos, and cake for the residents.

 

Boys and Girls Club
Twice a month

Twice a month we have a group of sisters go to volunteer and mentor the kids and Boys and Girls Club as well as tutor them in various troublesome subjects.

Zeta Chapter - Pace University

 

Hamilton Madison House

Hamilton Madison House is a voluntary, non-profit settlement house in the Two Bridges/Chinatown area of Manhattan’s Lower East Side dedicated to improving the quality of life in its community and beyond. Zeta Chapter participated in a fundraiser to help with future events at the Hamilton Madison House. The chapter raised $160.

 

Street Project

Since 1987, Street Project has been a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization entirely run by volunteers. They serve as an important bridge between worthy charitable organizations that need volunteers and enthusiastic young professionals who are looking to get involved. The Zeta Chapter of Sigma Sigma Rho volunteered at the food pantry for Street Project.

 

Care Walk for Cooley’s Anemia Foundation

Care Walk is a whole series of individual walks that let people across the country demonstrate their support for people with thalassemia. Zeta Chapter walked 2 miles and raised $100 for children suffering from thalassemia.

 

Read A Palooza

Read A Palooza is a community event that gets children excited to read with over two dozen booths each centered around a specific children's book. The sisters of Zeta Chapter helped children who visited the event make kites resembling The Cat in the Hat. The event was affiliated with Pace University.

Project OpenHand -  a volunteer program that packages meals for elderly people and those who are less fortunate. This service is written in our constitution, so we try to volunteer here atleast twice a semester, if not more.

March 12th, 2011 

The Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children - a day shelter that provides basic services such as providing food, laundry facilities, and day activities for women and children.

We have commonly partnered with Hands on Atlanta - an organization that hosts various philanthropic services. We participated in Partnership Walk, which is a walk held in Downtown Atlanta.  

 

Relay for Life Cancer Walk
April 8th, 2011

Participated in Relay 4 Life -  a walk for cancer held all over the US, across many campuses, and in Atlanta - held on April 8th.

 

  

Philadelphia City-Wide Colony

 

Relay for Life

An event that raises awareness for the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life takes place at Temple University where several organizations, Greek and non-Greek, come together to setup booths to raise money. During this event the Philadelphia Citywide Colony of Sigma Sigma Rho had their own booth and created henna tattoos to raise money for their team, Qayamat. Last year they raised close to $200 dollars and even made it into the newspaper. This year the colony's goal is to raise $400 dollars and make the event even more fun for everyone that participates.

Susan G Komen Walk Philadelphia

The Susan G Komen Walk is an annual tradition to empower the reality of an end to breast cancer forever. The Philadelphia Colony of Sigma Sigma Rho participated in the "Race course through Philadelphia". They raised awareness in the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate community by passing out information about the 2011 Susan G. Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure and filling the neighborhoods with Race materials. The colony also helped with preparations for the actual walk and volunteered to help the different groups participating in the walk.

 Beta Neighborhood Cleanup

Beta Phi Pi throws a national unity cleanup for all of the Greek-lettered organizations in the Philadelphia Area. The Philadelphia Citywide Colony of Sigma Sigma Rho is proud to participate in a service event that not only results in cleaner neighborhoods across Philadelphia, but also promotes unity amongst all of the different sororities and fraternities.

 

 Career Wardrobe Philadelphia

Career Wardrobe is an organization that empowers women by providing programs which inspire the confidence necessary to achieve self-sufficiency and pursue a productive career. Volunteers help to achieve this by providing professional work attire, educational programs and networking tools and opportunities. The Philadelphia Colony volunteered to provide customer service, general retail assistance, and organization of donations. 

 

 

South Florida City-Wide Colony

Project Downtown

Project Downtown is about being at the forefront of ending homelessness in North America. South Florida Colony sisters participated in this event by helping feed the homeless and educate the community.

“Heel the Sole”

 

Organized Walk: April 3, 2011- All participants walked one mile in heels. Purpose: The purpose of walking in heels is to feel a fraction of the pain that women who go through domestic violence feel. All participants paid a registration fee and all proceeds from the walk went to No More Tears (NMT). Somy Ali, the founder and coordinator for NMT presented information about domestic violence in the South Asian community and the service chair from South Florida Colony, Nadia Abdallah spoke about Sigma Sigma Rho's dedication to raising awareness about Domestic Violence.

Indian Cancer Run

UTK is still in progress, setting up the relationship with the Indian Cancer Run and plans on volunteering as much as they can to assist the Head of the ICR as much as possible.

 

Habitat for Humanity

UTK Colony will be participating in Habitat for Humanity in October this year. Please contact us if you'd like to help out.

 

 

 Boys and Girls Club

UTK Colony plans on participating in the Boys and Girls Club activities once every month.

 

 Family Justice Center

UTK Colony has been working with families at the Family Justice Center by going on the campus to read, talk, or simply help with various events.

 

 Adopt-a-kid

UTK Colony is currently working with a close contact to adopt a child in Thailand/Afghanistan

Sigma Sigma Rho not only celebrates sisterhood amongst women of South Asian decent, but also the combined unity of sisters from many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Together, all of the sisters of Sigma Sigma Rho nationwide join to form a sorority unlike any other.

Sigma Sigma Rho embraces the cultural ancestries from which its members descended and strives to carry out the voices of our ancestors in society today. Sigma Sigma Rho educates its members based upon the values and traditions of South Asian culture.
