Overview
Sigma Sigma Rho was established in December of 1998 by ten young women seeking for an existence of a group that defined unity amongst South Asian women. The name Sigma Sigma Rho was chosen for this organization because it substantially upholds our motives and goals, which are expressed as Sisterhood, Society, and Remembrance.
The first,
Sigma in our name defines
Sisterhood -

Sisterhood amongst South Asian women and a belief of unity amongst our cultural beliefs and values. What our organization educates society on and women of the south Asian decent is solely based upon the South Asian culture, something that another sorority cannot give to the South Asian female decent. Our cultural restrictions and values lie in two different aspects when compared to another sorority. We carry with us the roots that we have evolved from and strive to have those foot printed through history and across the nation.
The second,
Sigma of our name defines
Society - which is one of the sole purposes of our organization. Being of South Asian culture, our goal is to be able to surpass the vision of typical woman and show our society that we can do something for ourselves, our community and for people across the nation. We believe in the importance of working together with other organizations that strive for similar beliefs, giving our skills, and time to the society in philanthropic needs.
The third letter,
Rho in our name defines
Remembrance - Remembrance of who we are and never forgetting that. Remembrance of what ancestors and women of our kind have been through and carrying out the voices of those individuals in the society we live in today.an>
The Sigma Sigma Rho experience is a conglomerate of different types of activities.
We feel that a successful individual must be socially active, asd to the outside world. Through parties, mixers, and other social events, the general public becomes acquainted with the sorority. Second, it allows a sister to meet and interact with those outside the sorority and present herself to others as part of a larger collegiate organization. Throughout the years, we have held many successful socials and functions with many of the areas fine organizations.

Sigma Sigma Rho takes much pride in being the first South Asian based sorority established at the University of South Florida. As a culturally based organization we strive to achieve two objectives. First, we provide an atmosphere where students can share and preserve their culture. Second, as an organization we promote the awareness of South Asian culture to the community. This we achieve through the organization and participation in various South Asian themed events.
Through these ideals the sisterhood of our sorority hopes to serve both the South Asian community and the greater community at large both on and off our campuses, strengthen our sisterhood, and break down ethnic and cultural barriers that would otherwise keep sisters apart.
Philanthropy
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." - Mahatma Gandhi

Sigma Sigma Rho provides its members with many opportunities to become involved in community service and philanthropic projects. We have many national and local philanthropy all across the country. Beta Chapter dedicates itself to unite people in service with their respective communities while allowing the sisters to realize the importance of sharing problems and understanding people’s concerns and needs. Not only does our chapter “perform” many community service projects within the community but we firmly believe in going out into the community and motivating others by instilling in them a passion to help others.
In April of 2006, Sigma Sigma Rho was recognized for our outstanding philanthropic efforts. We were awarded Volunteer Greek Organization of the Year 2005-2006 and our Philanthropy Chair, Jane Alookaran, was awarded Volunteer Service Chair of the Year 2005-2006. We were honored to have gained such a title and will continue to go above and beyond in providing service to our community.
